Abstract

Tenggar Fossil Cave in Tulungagung Regency is one of the significant geological sites with great potential to be developed as a sustainable geotourism destination. This study aims to identify the potential of the Tenggar Fossil Cave, examine the development challenges, and formulate sustainable management strategies that can empower local communities while preserving geoheritage values. The research method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through literature review, field observations, and in-depth interviews with community leaders, tourism actors, and relevant stakeholders. The results indicate that Tenggar Cave contains rich geological features, such as ancient marine fossils and sedimentary layers dating back millions of years, which can be utilized as educational media for natural history and geology. However, the development of this area still faces several challenges, including limited infrastructure, suboptimal community involvement in management, and low awareness of the importance of geoheritage conservation. Therefore, multi-stakeholder collaboration and the integration of educational, conservation, and local economic empowerment programs are necessary. Geology-based edutourism such as Tenggar Cave has the potential to serve as a medium for strengthening local identity, improving environmental literacy, and promoting sustainable economic development based on regional potential.
