Abstract

Understanding history involves more than acquiring factual knowledge of the past; it requires interpreting historical sources to uncover their meanings and relevance to human life. In this regard, hermeneutics plays an important role in developing historical consciousness by facilitating a critical understanding of the relationship between the past, present, and future. This article aims to examine the relationship between hermeneutics and the development of historical consciousness through the philosophical perspectives of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Jörn Rüsen. This study employs a historical approach using library research and conceptual analysis to examine the five thinkers’ perspectives on understanding, interpretation, and historical consciousness. The findings indicate that Schleiermacher and Dilthey provide the foundations for interpreting meaning, while Heidegger emphasizes that understanding is always shaped by prior understanding. Gadamer further develops this perspective by highlighting the historical and dialogical nature of understanding through the encounter between the reader’s horizon and the meaning of historical sources. Meanwhile, Rüsen explains how the interpretation of historical experiences contributes to the formation of historical consciousness by connecting the past, present, and future. A hermeneutic approach to understanding history not only facilitates the interpretation of past events but also encourages critical reflection on present realities and the development of future orientations. Therefore, hermeneutics contributes to the development of historical consciousness that enables individuals to understand human life critically, reflectively, and meaningfully.
