Exploring Cangkruan as a Cultural Practice for Promoting Psychological Well-Being

Cangkruan is a traditional Javanese cultural practice characterized by informal social gatherings that facilitate relaxed communication and meaningful social bonds. Although strongly embedded in East Javanese society, modernization and digital lifestyles have led to a decline in this practice. This study explores the psychological functions of cangkruan using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with three active participants and supported by a literature review. The findings reveal that cangkruan plays a significant role in promoting psychological well-being by fulfilling autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs as described in Self-Determination Theory. It also enhances emotional regulation through shared humor, storytelling, and social reflection, and serves as a culturally rooted coping mechanism that strengthens a sense of belonging and community resilience. The study concludes that cangkruan is not merely a social activity, but a cultural resource that supports mental health and community cohesion.
