The Dynamics of Lokananta: From Recording Studio to Museum (1956-2012)

Dinamika Lokananta: Dari Studio Rekaman Hingga Menjadi Museum Tahun 1956-2012

Abstract

This research aims to explain the transformation of Lokananta in Surakarta from a state-owned recording studio into a museum between 1956 and 2012. It traces the condition of Surakarta’s musi, entertainment, and recording landscape rior to 1956, the institution’s rise as the state’s leading record producer, its subsequent decline, and its eventual transformation into a museum. The study employs the critical historical method, comprising heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Its sources consist mainly of contemporary newspaper archives, official government documents, and academic literature on Indonesian cultural and media history. The findings show that Surakarta’s rich musical and broadcasting ecosystem, built through the Solosche Radio Vereeniging and the early Radio Republik Indonesia, created the context from which Lokananta emerged in 1956 as part of the state’s cultural politics, Lokananta then enjoyed its golden era as Indonesia’s largest record producer from the 1960s to the 1980s, before experiencing a decline in the 1990s caused by institutional rigdity rather  than technological disruption. Toward 2012, the institution was transformed into a museum through the initiative of academics and musicians. This research concludes that these four phases cannot be understood separately, as they from one continuos historical process shaped by the ongoing negotiation between the state, technology, and society. It implies that preserving national musical identity is a shared effort rather than the responsibility of the state alone.
