Operational Dynamics of the Tjap Bal Tiga Kretek Cigarette Company in Kudus, 1932-1962: From Adaptation to Failed Recovery

Tjap Bal Tiga was one of the largest kretek cigarette companies in Kudus that underwent changes in its operational conditions from 1932 to 1962. These changes are evident in the company’s ability to cope with various pressures and its efforts to ensure business continuity during different periods. This study aims to analyze the operational dynamics of Tjap Bal Tiga as well as the evolution of its ability to sustain and restore business operations. The study employs a historical methodology through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing sources such as contemporary newspapers, company archives, previous research, and relevant literature. Tjap Bal Tiga was still able to adapt to pressures related to excise taxes, regulations, labor issues, and production disruptions, allowing production to continue. In contrast, from 1942 to 1962, operational conditions progressively deteriorated, and various attempts at revival in 1944, 1947, and 1962 failed to restore the company’s viability. These findings indicate a shift from the ability to adapt and maintain operations during 1932–1941 to a failure to recover during 1942–1962. This shift demonstrates that a company’s sustainability depends not only on its ability to withstand pressures but also on the strength of its resources and management in responding to changing business conditions.
