Abstract

This study examines the oral history of the ikat weaving tradition in Bondo Kodi Village, Kodi District, Southwest Sumba Regency, focusing on the role of women weavers as agents of cultural preservation. Although the tradition remains an important part of local cultural identity, its oral history and the role of women weavers have not been systematically documented. This study employed a qualitative approach using the oral history method. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, with informants selected using snowball sampling. The findings show that the weaving tradition has been transmitted across generations through oral traditions within families and the local community. Women weavers play key roles in preserving cultural knowledge, symbolic values, and traditional weaving practices while responding to modernization through intergenerational knowledge transfer, motif innovation, and digital promotion. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting women weavers as the central actors in sustaining the weaving tradition through an oral history perspective. The findings contribute to oral history and cultural heritage studies and provide practical insights for community-based cultural preservation programs
