Plagiarism Policy
The Editorial Board of Jurnal Crystal: Publikasi Penelitian Kimia dan Terapannya considers plagiarism a serious breach of publication ethics and does not tolerate it in any form. This policy sets out how similarity is checked, how plagiarism is identified, and what actions are taken. It follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
- Definition
Plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language, ideas, data, or work of another person, or of the author’s own previously published work, presented as original without proper acknowledgement. It includes the following forms:
- Direct plagiarism: copying text word for word without quotation marks and citation.
- Paraphrasing plagiarism: rewording another source’s text or ideas without citation, including the use of paraphrasing tools.
- Mosaic plagiarism: combining fragments from several sources without proper citation.
- Self-plagiarism and duplicate publication: reusing substantial parts of the author’s own published work, or submitting the same work to more than one journal, without disclosure. This includes articles derived from theses or dissertations, conference proceedings, and reports that have been published.
- Translation plagiarism: translating another author’s work from one language into another, for example from English, Arabic, or a regional language into Indonesian, and presenting it as original without citation.
- Undisclosed AI-generated content: text produced by generative AI tools and presented as the author’s own work without disclosure, as regulated in the journal’s Generative AI Policy.
- Similarity Checking
- All submitted manuscripts are checked with Turnitin at initial screening, and the final version is checked again before publication.
- The similarity report is generated with the bibliography and quoted material excluded, and with small matches of fewer than 10 words excluded.
- The maximum overall similarity is 25%, and similarity with any single source must not exceed 5%.
- Manuscripts that exceed the 25% limit are rejected at the initial screening stage. Authors may revise the manuscript substantially and submit it as a new submission.
- For manuscripts below the limit, the editor still examines the report. A similarity percentage is an indicator, not proof of plagiarism, and the final decision is based on the editor’s assessment of the matched content.
- Author Responsibilities
- Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
- Verbatim material from another source must be marked with quotation marks (or indentation for long quotations) and accompanied by a complete citation.
- Reproduction of tables, figures, images, or substantial excerpts from other sources requires permission from the copyright holder and full acknowledgement.
- Authors must disclose any overlap with their own previous publications, theses, or proceedings when submitting.
- Levels of Plagiarism and Editorial Actions
When plagiarism is suspected, the Editor-in-Chief and the handling editor assess its extent and take one of the following actions:
|
Level |
Description |
Action |
|
Minor |
Short sentences or phrases from another source used without proper citation, involving no significant data or ideas |
The author receives a warning and is asked to revise the manuscript and cite the sources properly |
|
Moderate |
Significant paragraphs, data, or ideas from another source used without proper citation, or undisclosed self-plagiarism |
The manuscript is rejected |
|
Severe |
Large portions of the article, including results, data, ideas, or methods, are copied from other works; translation plagiarism; or duplicate publication |
The manuscript is rejected, the authors are barred from submitting to the journal for a period determined by the editorial board, and the authors’ institutions may be notified |
- Plagiarism Detected after Publication
If plagiarism is identified after publication, the journal will investigate in accordance with the COPE flowcharts. Depending on the severity, the article may be corrected or retracted in accordance with the journal’s Article Retraction policy. The retraction notice will remain publicly accessible.
- Author Clarification
Before a final decision on moderate or severe plagiarism is made, authors are given the opportunity to respond to the editor’s findings. Authors may also appeal a decision by writing to the Editor-in-Chief at crystaljurnal@gmail.com
