Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are a type of metallic nanoparticle with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm and have wide-ranging applications in various fields. Gold nanoparticles can be synthesized using several methods. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize gold nanoparticles through a green synthesis approach using Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp. (Indonesian bay leaf) extract as a bioreducing agent and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the synthesized gold nanoparticles using the ABTS assay at concentrations of 20, 10, 5, and 2.5 ppm. Characterization was performed using UV–Vis spectrophotometry to determine the maximum absorption wavelength and absorbance, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine the particle size of the synthesized AuNPs. The results demonstrated the successful formation of gold nanoparticles, indicated by a color change to purple. At a concentration of 20 ppm, the synthesized AuNPs exhibited a maximum absorption wavelength of 540 nm with an absorbance of 0.475. TEM analysis revealed particle sizes ranging from 10 to 16 nm, with an average particle size of 13.6 nm. Furthermore, the synthesized gold nanoparticles exhibited very strong antioxidant activity, with inhibition values of 73.9% (20 ppm), 58.5% (10 ppm), 38.8% (5 ppm), and 35.2% (2.5 ppm), and an IC₅₀ value of 2.4 µg/mL.
