Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of instructional media in the Social Studies (IPS) learning process at SMP Negeri 8 Halmahera Tengah. The use of instructional media is expected to assist teachers in delivering material more clearly, engagingly, and contextually, thereby making it easier for students to grasp various social, historical, geographical, and economic concepts. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research subjects consist of the school principal, the vice-principal for curriculum affairs, Social Studies teachers, and students of SMP Negeri 8 Halmahera Tengah. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The research results indicate that the use of instructional media in Social Studies lessons involves utilizing visual media, print media, maps, images, videos, and digital media, aligned with the specific subject matter and learning objectives. These media assist teachers in clarifying material delivery, enhancing student attention, and fostering student engagement during the learning process. However, implementation still faces several challenges, such as limited facilities and infrastructure, restricted access to technology, internet connectivity issues, and varying teacher capabilities in developing instructional media. Therefore, teacher creativity, school support, and the utilization of the local environment and culture as learning resources are essential. By employing media that are appropriate and suited to student characteristics, Social Studies instruction at SMP Negeri 8 Halmahera Tengah can become more effective, engaging, and meaningful.
