Abstract

Malaria remains a major public health problem in Papua Province, Indonesia, particularly in Jayapura City. Muara Tami District is one of the endemic areas with substantial malaria transmission, influenced by environmental conditions and human activities that support mosquito-vector exposure. This study aimed to identify the demographic characteristics of malaria patients and examine their spatial distribution in Muara Tami District using a Geographic Information System (GIS). An observational study with descriptive and spatial analysis was conducted using malaria case data recorded in 2025 from the Jayapura City Health Office and primary health centers in Muara Tami District. Patient characteristics were analyzed according to sex and age group, while GIS was used to visualize the distribution of cases at the village level. The results identified 10,869 malaria cases, with males accounting for a greater proportion of cases than females. The highest proportion was observed among individuals aged 21–30 years, indicating a substantial burden among the productive-age population. Spatial analysis showed an uneven distribution of cases, with the highest concentration occurring in Koya Barat, followed by Holtekamp, Koya Timur, and Koya Tengah. The study contributes a village-level spatial perspective by integrating demographic characteristics with malaria case distribution in an endemic border district. The findings indicate that GIS-based mapping can support the identification of priority areas and population groups for more spatially targeted malaria surveillance and control interventions in Muara Tami District.
