This paper examines the adaptation strategies of the Orang Darat indigenous community in facing the threat of relocation due to the Rempang Eco City national strategic project (PSN) on Rempang Island, Galang District, Batam City. Using historical and ethnographic qualitative methods combined with Durkheim’s social solidarity theory, this paper highlights how external pressures trigger the strengthening of collective identity and resilience among the Orang Darat. Empirical findings—based on field observations, interviews with elders such as Lamat, and documentation of changes in population and housing—show that the threat of eviction consolidated the community’s unity and collective survival strategies. Shared history, religion, language, economy, and lifestyle form the foundation of solidarity that reinforces their social cohesion and cultural endurance. This study emphasizes that relocation is not merely a physical displacement but also a threat to identity continuity, livelihood sustainability, and the survival of indigenous culture in the Riau Islands.
