Determinants Of Farmer Participation In The Organic Coconut Sugar Certification Program (A Case Study at the Organic Farmers Integration Cooperative in Banyumas Regency)

Abstract

The transition from traditional farming patterns to international organic standards among coconut sugar farmers in Banyumas Regency is often hindered by low participation due to limited technical experience and economic constraints. Furthermore, the gap in technical information access from institutions to farmers serves as a crucial factor triggering hesitation and non-compliance with established organic certification procedures. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of farmer participation in the implementation phase of the organic coconut sugar certification program at the Organic Farmers Integration Cooperative (KOPIPO), Banyumas Regency. The research employed a case study method with a quantitative approach through a survey of 101 respondents selected via proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) through SmartPLS 4.0 software. The results indicated that the model had a good fit, with the independent variables contributing 70.1% ( R²= 0,701) to farmer participation. The findings proved that farming experience (X1), income (X2), and ease of access to information (X3) had positive and significant effects on farmer participation (Y). Income was found to be the strongest determinant because premium price incentives served as the primary economic motivation for farmer compliance with organic Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). In conclusion, strengthening farmer participation required the integration of economic stability, the utilization of field experience, and the seamless flow of technical information. Participation enhancement strategies must focus on incentive transparency and information digitalization to maintain the sustainability of organic certification at the institutional level.
